for Teachers & Parents

I originally chose the name Toe by Toe to signify that a student makes progress by the tiniest steps - one toe at a time.  However, even though the steps taken are small, the student can clearly measure his or her progress right from the first page.  The student's confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result. 

Over 25 years of fieldwork went into the development of the system and it is this research which makes the method so easy to use.  You don't have to be trained in any field of Education to tutor with Toe by Toe.  In fact, the manual often works better with  non-professionals using it as they do not come to the task with any pre-conceived notions and thus simply follow the very detailed instructions to the letter. 

Toe By Toe was developed over a period of twenty five years. The creator of this carefully structured, diagnostic system for the teaching of reading is Keda Cowling, a retired primary school teacher from Baildon, West Yorkshire. At the start of her teaching career, Keda noticed that a significant proportion of her pupils were not making satisfactory progress with their reading using the conventional teaching  methods. Many of these pupils would now be diagnosed as 'dyslexic'  i.e. suffering from dyslexia ( also referred to as specific learning difficulties ). After many years of painstaking trial and error, she realised that a totally different approach to literacy / illiteracy was required.  She began to experiment with various strategies to help these children. It became obvious to her that a phonic approach when combined with a successful technique for getting these skills into the long term memory was the key to progress.  It was this struggle which eventually produced the scheme we now know as Toe By Toe.  With the able assistance of her son Harry, the scheme was put into book form and published in 1994.  Since publication, Toe By Toe has been a phenomenal success.  Spreading solely by 'word of mouth', it has been sold all over the world.  Proof - if further proof were needed - of its unprecedented effectiveness.
