LISTENING THERAPY
What Do Our Ears Do?
It sounds like a silly
question and you will probably already have answered "Allow us to hear of
course!" But in fact there’s much more to it than that.
They also assist us in many other vital areas
such as speech, understanding, communication, coordination and balance. They
also have a dramatic if little known role in the amount of energy feeding
through to the brain. It has been calculated that the brain receives up to 80%
of the energy required through the ears!
Therefore, it follows that if the ear is not
functioning to its full potential, neither will we.
There are many ways in which the performance
of the ear can be affected and it's not just the obvious things like ear
infections or damage due to loud noises. Over time our bodies can also shut down
the ears' various functions in response to stress, illness or emotional trauma,
often rooted in early childhood.
For whatever reason it’s like our
subconscious is saying "That's too difficult for me - I don't want to hear
it!
In the extreme of course this may manifest in
conditions like deafness or attention disorders. However some other effects like
lack of concentration and poor memory are often so gradual that we simply learn
to live with things as they are.
As you are reading this page, your brain is
decoding the words into the recognised sounds of language. So if you are not
hearing the full range of frequencies, your ability, to read and, conversely, to
write, can be affected. This, in a nutshell, is the dysfunction that lies behind
Dyslexia.
Listening Therapy is designed to re-educate
the ear to its natural state of proper listening.
Part of the problem in listening is the
malfunction of the muscles of the middle ear. For this reason, treatment focuses
on the muscles of the middle car by giving them a work out.
Although sound and music are involved this is
neither Sound nor Music Therapy. Listening Therapy is a unique treatment based
on the published life's work of French ENT and Neurological specialist Professor
Alfred A Tomatis.
The therapy is practised in over 200 centres
around the world and has been found to help a whole series of conditions,
including Autism, Dyslexia, Motor Development Skills, Vertigo, Deafness,
Tinnitus, Stress, Depression, Leaning Difficulties, Epilepsy, Stroke Patients,
Brain Injury,
The work is often associated with children,
some of whom are treated using the recorded voice of their mother, which is then
replayed to the children, using a high frequency filter. This has the effect of
making the recorded voice sound, to the child, as it did when the child was in
the womb. Often the child has experienced difficulties at birth. The mother's
voice tape will ease the subconscious trauma of the birth, over a period of
time.
The other, perhaps more glamorous application
has been in the world of music and entertainment. Professional singers benefit
tremendously from being able to hear (and therefore sing) a fuller range of
frequencies. Famous clients have included Maria Callas, pop singer Sting and
French Actor Gerard Depardieux whose was famously cured of the stutter which
threatened his career.
This information pack has been tailored where
possible to your particular enquiry and includes a Question and Answer section
on the treatment.
If you would like to book an Initial
Assessment please call one of our Listening Centres.
The initial Assessment will take between 1.5
and 2 hours, costs £55.00 (incl.VAT) and does not commit you to any further
involvement. During the assessment, our consultant will be pleased to provide
you with full information in respect of the treatment, based on the results of
the Listening Test and also be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
