The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child

Robert Frank Ph.D., with Kathryn E Livingston

cover

Dyslexia is a complex disability endured by a third of children in the UK – with no two children affected alike. But it need not be a barrier to success, as the above list of high achievers (representing just a handful of famous people known to have dyslexia) shows.

Until we understand what it is like to see the world through a dyslexic child’s eyes, it is very hard to know how best to help the child cope with and manage his or her dyslexia. The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child bridges this information gap. Author Dr Frank, an educational psychologist and family therapist, is himself dyslexic and thus able to give a unique insight into the frustrations and fears of dyslexic children as well as propose strategies for managing the condition and achieving success.

Dr Frank’s observations and programme are based on years of working with children and families dealing with behavioural and learning problems. He explains that dyslexia is more than just a reading problem and that, in fact, many of the methods now used by parents and teachers may be   making matters worse by reinforcing the child’s fears and frustrations.

The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child is divided into 4 accessible sections:

·        First Part: helps the reader to understand the child’s internal struggles

·        Second Part: invites the reader to experience the way the secret world of dyslexia works

through a series of exercises and activities

·        Third Part: explains the diagnosis of dyslexia in a practical and positive way

·        Fourth Part: offers a skill-building programme that can lead to lifelong success

The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child will enable readers to appreciate the emotional struggles the dyslexic child faces, help dyslexic children discover their own strengths and encourage all dyslexics to develop greater self-esteem and to aim high.

"This is an excellent book for both parent and teacher alike.  I found it read well and flows easily and really puts you into "their world" (the dyslexic child).  It gives you practical examples of situations which cause real problems for dyslexics, and will give you a new perspective on what it must feel like to live in this "secret worl"

Highly recommend this book"  If you get it and read it, please email me your thoughts" .

5 out of 5 stars Reading David, December 18, 2003

Reviewer: Karen Fox

The book, Reading David, by Lissa Weinstein helped me deal with my own son's struggle with dyslexia. Lissa and David touch the emotions of both mother and child through the unique, overwhelming journey of dyslexia. The reader experiences the triumphs and struggles of everyday living. This book taught me that my son is a very bright, unique individual who desires to fit in. I felt someone was feeling what I was feeling and that it was okay to be angry one day and joyful the next because living with dyslexia is such an up and down rollercoaster.

The LCP Solution: The Remarkable Nutritional Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia
Jacqueline Stordy

cover

This title is about the remarkable nutritional treatment for three of the most common learning disabilities. Learning disorders have reached epidemic proportions. Now, a growing body of scientific research is proving that ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia can all be dramatically improved with a simple nutritional supplementation. This book reveals how a prominent British researcher discovered that a diet rich in essential fatty acids was the key to boosting the abilities of children suffering from dyslexia and dyspraxia at exactly the same time as researchers at Purdue University were getting similar results with ADHD children. The book details the research while vividly illustrating the dramatic transformation in the lives of the children (and adults) benefiting from this treatment.

"Interesting and informative book ... I read it an put my son on Efalex and he has improved dramatically with his concentration and calmness "   A very informative look at the nutrition side and what a difference it can make".

The Psychology of Dyslexia: A Handbook for Teachers and Useful for parents.

Michael Thomson,MSc PhD CPsychol FIARLD AFBPSS (Principal, East Court School for Dyslexic Children, Ramsgate, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Applied Child Psychology, University of Kent

The Psychology of Dyslexia: A Handbook...

The primary purpose of this text is to present the underlying psychology of dyslexia to teachers who may be taking a training course on teaching children with dyslexia. Parents of dyslexic children, and teachers who have dyslexic children in their classes, should also find the book useful. The first four chapters explain the assessment process. The text grew out of psychology lectures given by Mike Thomson on one of the Dyslexia Institute's courses in Specific Learning Disabilities. Tables and diagrams are provided in the text wherever possible. References are kept to a minimum and are not allowed to interrupt the flow of the book, and complexity for its own sake is avoided. The spotlight is firmly on the essentials

How to Reach & Teach Children & Teens with Dyslexia  by CM Stowe

From the Back Cover
"This is a wonderful reference book for parents of children with dyslexia. It's the kind of book they've been asking for. I have been recommnending it to parents as well as teachers. The interviews with parents, students and adults with dyslexia are one of the strengths of this book. It makes the plight of dyslexic very real and gives the reader insight into their struggles. Parents can gain a sense of support and realize they are not alone in their efforts to help their child, and teachers are continually reminded of the profound effect their teaching style and their words have on students."--Heddy Christenson, Director, Eagle Mountain School

Plees Help: Help for Children with Dyslexia

5 out of 5 stars A must read for parents and teachers of dyslexic children.

 Reviewer: jegibbs from London

This is a brilliant 12 page guide on how a child may explain how it feels to be dyslexic and gives teachers an insight on how a dyslexic child finds certain tasks difficult.

eg: "I wish I had a printer I could plug straight into my brain and then I would show you I'm not stupid".

When I read this booklet to my son (8 yrs) it was like a curtain being lifted for him "Yes that's just how I feel mum
